Keck was born in Utica, Iowa. He earned a PhD from the University of Iowa and taught biology at Coe College (1936-1947) and North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. He was an active member of the Cedar Rapids Bird Club, the Iowa Ornithologist's Union and the Iowa Academy of Science. After moving to Illinois he joined the Chicago Ornithological Society.
